Fighting Future Tripping
I received some disappointing news recently that I allowed to send me down a path of negative emotions and thoughts.
In 30 seconds I went from hearing the negative news to feeling discouraged followed by thoughts of homelessness
I know. I know. I can be dramatic at times, but that’s where my thoughts were going.
Some friends of mine call this “Future Tripping”, and they say it’s very dangerous.
Future Tripping is when you allow yourself to experience negative emotions based on negative circumstances that haven’t even occurred.
It’s dangerous because negative emotions are often what sparks the negative behaviors that can be counterproductive or even destructive to ourselves and others.
Future Tripping robs us of the Power of the Present. The ability to be in the moment and respond to tough situations in ways that could bring about a positive result.
I can relate. When I chose to respond to tough situations by soothing my sorrows in ice cream or binge watching TV, I was experiencing the affects of poorly handled negative emotions.
For those like me who still fight Future Tripping at times, my friends offer some advice:
Stay in the moment.
When tough situations come up, ask God for the grace to focus only on what you can control in the moment and then let him take care of the rest.
May I always remember the Power of the Present to fight Future Tripping, and handle tough situations in ways that could bring about a positive result.
